Dermatology Outpatient Services

Clinics at RAH

Clinics are held at various times Monday –Thursday for all dermatology conditions.

Priority service is provided to:

complex skin disease, such as severe eczema/psoriasis
moderate and severe skin disease unresponsive to first line management
systemic skin conditions
skin malignancies – melanoma and NMSC, skin lymphomas
diagnosis and management of rare acquired or congenital dermatoses
patients requiring complex drugs for management of dermatological skin disorders
skin surveillance for high risk patients, such as transplant patients
acute skin presentations including widespread blistering diseases.

Services excluded:

laser service
botox treatment for cosmetic or primary axillary hyperhidrosis.
mild/limited involvement of dermatoses, such as mild eczema/psoriasis/mild acne/limited cutaneous fungal or other infections without attempted confirmation and appropriate treatment for acceptable duration
hair disorders and vitiligo (TQEH specialist clinic).

Clinical Categories/Process

Adult Triage Criteria for referral
Emergency All urgent cases must be discussed with the on call Dermatology registrar.	Dermatological emergencies with threat to major organs e.g. erythroderma who is hemodynamically unstable Severe skin infections e.g. eczema herpeticum Severe widespread blistering/pustular disease (>10% denuded skin) e.g. drug eruptions, toxic epidermal necrolysis, Steven Johnson syndrome Acute deterioration of a stable blistering/pustular disorder
Category 1 Target within 3 weeks	New onset of erythroderma (Haemodynamically stable) Diagnosis of melanoma/non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) Bullous pemphigoid/pemphigus or other autoimmune blistering diseases
Category 2 Target within 3 months	Suspected non-melanoma skin cancers Suspected dysplastic naevi Symptomatic extensive inflammatory dermatoses - new onset but patient hemodynamically stable Melanomas requiring wider excision where primary completely excised Stable blistering disorders for diagnosis and management e.g. porphyria cutanea tarda
Category 2 Target 6-12 months	Stable inflammatory dermatoses (previously diagnosed) but moderate/severe diseases e.g. Eczema/psoriasis. Skin checks for high risk melanoma patients e.g. previous history of, 1) gorlins syndrome 2) patients on immunosuppressive therapy and high risk of skin cancers 3) History of multiple dysplastic naevi OR at risk for melanoma Genodermatosis - cutaneous involvement Patients requiring complex medications

We accept GP and specialist referrals to this service.

All referrals are triaged by the service according to clinical urgency. Patients who are unstable and requiring immediate assessment should be sent directly to the Emergency and Trauma Centre.

To refer your patient, follow the outpatient service information, triage and referral guidelines, complete and fax a referral to us. For urgent referrals, also contact the registrar on call to discuss the case. Our registrars are on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

To ensure appropriate and timely triage, include all demographic and clinical details as well as relevant investigation results.

Alternate Care Options

Not all patients with dermatological conditions can be offered appointments in the CALHN dermatology clinics. In most cases the key to appropriate management is a detailed history and examination.
