The intensive care unit at the RAH is a multidisciplinary team featuring consultants, registrars, trainees, nurses and allied health specialists, from diverse backgrounds, both culturally and professionally.
The ICU welcomes and fosters trainees and specialists from all backgrounds, with a strong emphasis on education and training as well as research and innovation.
ICU Medical team
The ICU medical team is made up of consultants, registrars, trainees and medical students.
Consultants in the ICU come from a variety of specialities including anaesthesia, general medicine and emergency medicine, who have subsequently trained in intensive care, as well as dedicated ICU fellows that work in the department.

ICU Nursing team
The Royal Adelaide Hospital intensive care unit nursing team consists of over 450 qualified intensive care clinicians, providing collaborative nursing care within a multidisciplinary team.
The nursing team is equally divided between four wings within the intensive care unit and are supported by:
- Nurse Unit Managers (NUMs)
- Educators
- Nurse managers
- Nurse Lead.
The complex care needs of our patients and the quaternary services provided at the RAH ICU has seen the development of specialist roles within the nursing team to manage the following ICU services:
- Medical Emergency Response Services (MERS)
- Outreach Services beyond ICU
- ECMO coordinator
- End of Life Coordinator
- Research Coordinator
- Survive & Thrive support role, for our post-ICU peer support group
We take great pride in providing holistic care, which is achieved through medical and allied health teams working collaboratively to provide our patients with the support they need during their ICU stay.
